The Cardiovascular Research Institute performs leading research in cardiovascular and pulmonary biology and disease, training scientists to become future leaders in these fields. The new five-story, 236,000 sf laboratory building on the Mission Bay campus houses eight specialized cardiovascular research groups, a vivarium, and associated support space. The design team utilized a refined approach to meeting vibration requirements and achieve maximum economy and building performance. The team used an Integrated Project Delivery process, which resulted in increased collaboration between the design team, the contractor's team, and the university's inspector-of-record and fire marshal. Rutherford + Chekene provided structural engineering services. R+C is also providing tenant improvements to spaces within the building.

Green Design and Best-Value

The LEED Gold-certified building’s four-story lobby provides ample daylight and skyline views and every floor has quiet interaction areas for staff. A covered ground-floor arcade along the courtyard connects to the neighboring lab building.

The building blends stainless steel, terra-cotta and glass and each material reflects functions within the building: terra-cotta for support spaces, and aluminum and stainless steel for research space.

The university used best-value procurement, selecting a team with a portfolio of similar projects, strong collaborative ability, and the ability to adhere to the demanding schedule.
