The hospital was part of a plan to replace 272 licensed beds housed in buildings that fail to meet State of California seismic requirements. The new hospital accommodates 197 intensive care beds, general acute care and rehabilitation beds, and support functions. The project used Building Information Modeling for greater efficiency in the design and construction process and was designed to meet LEED Gold standards. Rutherford + Chekene provided structural engineering services.
The Sobrato Pavilion’s new Aquatic Therapy Center will feature a large pool for physical rehabilitation, brain trauma and spinal cord injury patients. The pool facility will overlook Independence Plaza Gardens.
