Located approximately 800 feet from the Hayward Fault, this circa 1907 building, designed by John Galen Howard, is included on the National Register of Historic Places. Renovation of the 143,000 sf structure utilizes base isolation and dampers to respect the historic character of the building while creating a contemporary teaching and research facility for the Material Sciences and Mineral Engineering departments. Rutherford + Chekene provided structural and geotechnical engineering services.
