Scope:
Structural Engineering
Size:
215,500 sf
Key Info:
The new BioMedical Innovation (BMI) facility at Stanford University’s School of Medicine is home to world-class researchers working to translate their discoveries into treatments and cures. The 215,500 sf laboratory building and surrounding infrastructure contains wet and dry research laboratories, common areas, and offices, and features light-filled spaces for gathering and collaboration. R+C was structural engineer for the project, which was designed using response spectrum analysis and then checked with nonlinear response history analysis. The building is comprised of a four-story, steel framed Buckling-Restrained Braced Frame structure over a one-story basement on grade beams. These analyses were used to confirm that Stanford’s more stringent Class 2 performance objectives were met.
