Last Friday, Rutherford + Chekene’s José A. Sánchez, PE, presented at the “Mega Viernes Civil” conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico — a one-day event bringing together professionals from across the civil engineering industry to discuss topics ranging from structural engineering and transportation to geotechnical engineering, water resources, seismic resilience, and construction management.
José’s presentation, “Non-Ductile Concrete Buildings in Puerto Rico: Seismic Risk and Lessons from Mitigation Programs in California,” explored the seismic vulnerabilities of Puerto Rico’s existing concrete building stock and highlighted the importance of proactive mitigation strategies informed by California’s experience.
With Puerto Rico’s seismic exposure and aging building inventory, these conversations are especially important as communities continue to evaluate long-term resilience and public safety strategies.
We’re proud to see our team sharing knowledge, contributing technical expertise, and participating in industry conversations that help shape safer, stronger communities.
Thank you to the organizers of Mega Viernes Civil and everyone who attended the session in San Juan.
