The UC Santa Cruz Kresge College Renewal project remains in the spotlight as one of the region’s most talked-about higher education transformations. With Rutherford + Chekene serving as structural engineer, the project was recently featured at the International Mass Timber Conference in Portland, where project team member Truebeck Construction highlighted the innovative work taking place on the campus.
Momentum continued this first quarter with AIA Monterey Bay hosting an on-site Mass Timber Tour of Kresge College, giving attendees a firsthand look at the evolving student housing community and the role of sustainable wood construction in shaping the future of campus design. The project was also recognized in a WoodWorks presentation showcasing notable mass timber developments, further underscoring its industry significance.
The Kresge College Renewal is an ambitious reimagining of one of UC Santa Cruz’s most iconic residential communities, combining preservation, new student housing, and modernized campus spaces within the university’s unique redwood forest setting. The scale and complexity of the work—including multiple rebuilds, renovations, and new buildings across a steeply sloped site—has made it a standout example of collaborative design and engineering.
As construction continues, it is clear the project is already making an impact well beyond campus boundaries. From conference stages to professional tours and national presentations, Kresge College Renewal continues to demonstrate how thoughtful structural design, sustainability, and innovation can come together to support the next generation of student living.
