San Francisco, CA
Recognizing the need for affordable student housing in San Francisco, UC Law is working to create an “academic village” by updating multiple buildings in the heart of downtown San Francisco. The project at 198 McAllister involved constructing a new 385,000 sf building that has 12 stories of housing over a four-story mixed-use podium. The building contains studios and one- and two-bedroom units for students and faculty members. Additionally, the building holds classrooms and leasable retail space. The primary structure is composed of shear walls with post-tensioned slabs.

Performance-based structural design
Leavening peerless structural engineering skill with humor, philosophy, people skills and, above all, a consummate understanding of San Francisco's permitting process, [Alan] saw this project through.
