Emeryville, CA
R+C was structural engineer for this speculative life science building, situated on an urban, constrained site in Emeryville. The building’s upper floors contain 245,000 sf of laboratory and office space, and 160,000 sf of parking beneath the building. The design used buckling-restrained braced frames and also featured a roof garden over a parking level. The project is LEED Silver certified.
The project was extremely cost- and schedule-driven and required close collaboration between the developer, contractor, and design team. The schedule for design required completion of the main structural package five months after the start of design. The project was delivered on a fast-track schedule with a multiple bid project delivery.
R+C also provided laboratory tenant improvement services at EmeryStation East for Amyris’ 71,000 sf headquarters, Joint BioEnergy Institute’s new 65,000 sf research center, and rooftop equipment installation and structural observation of pads to support new equipment in the boiler/chiller rooms for Bayer. R+C, as part of the warm shell efforts, also designed a roof platform for support of cogeneration equipment.

Leavening peerless structural engineering skill with humor, philosophy, people skills and, above all, a consummate understanding of San Francisco's permitting process, [Alan] saw this project through.
